Certification in three numbers

What can be yours
The standards businesses ask for most
Each standard covers one aspect of how a business is run. Many businesses start with ISO 9001.
-
ISO 9001: quality
A quality management system. The most widely held standard, open to a business of any size or sector.
-
ISO 14001: environment
Managing the effect the business has on the environment.
-
ISO 45001: health and safety
Reducing the risk of injury and ill health at work.
-
ISO/IEC 27001: information security
Protecting data. Often asked of software and services companies.
-
ISO 22000: food safety
Food safety management, for businesses anywhere in the food chain.
-
ISO 13485: medical devices
Quality management for makers and suppliers of medical devices.
ISO writes the standards but does not certify anyone. Certificates are issued by independent certification bodies. Ask whether the body is accredited, because buyers and tender authorities often check.
How it becomes yours
How ISO certification works
Five stages. We assist with the preparation. The certification body carries out the audit and issues the certificate.
-
01 Standard
Choosing the standard and scope
We look at what your customers and tenders ask for, and which parts of the business the certificate should cover.
-
02 Gap analysis
Where you stand today
Your current practices are compared with what the standard requires, to find what is missing.
-
03 Documentation
Policies, procedures and records
We help prepare the documents the standard requires, written around how your business works.
-
04 Implementation
Putting it into practice
The team follows the system, records are kept, and an internal audit and management review are carried out.
-
05 Audit
The certification audit
The certification body audits in two stages and issues the certificate once any gaps are closed.
Why businesses certify
What usually prompts an ISO certificate
ISO standards are voluntary. These are the reasons a business takes one on.
| Reason | What it looks like | Standard often asked for |
|---|---|---|
| Customer requirements | A buyer makes certification a condition of the contract. | ISO 9001 |
| Tenders | A government or corporate tender lists it among the criteria. | ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 |
| Regulation and exports | A sector or an export market expects a recognised system. | ISO 13485, ISO 22000 |
| Trust with data | Clients want proof their information is handled securely. | ISO/IEC 27001 |
| Consistency | The business wants the same result every time, as it grows. | ISO 9001 |

Before you decide
ISO certification, answered
What is ISO certification?
It is a certification body's assurance that a product, service or management system meets the requirements of an ISO standard. ISO develops the standards. Independent certification bodies audit businesses and issue the certificates.
Is ISO certification mandatory in India?
No. ISO standards are voluntary. In practice, customers, tenders and some regulated sectors make certification a condition of doing business.
Which ISO standard does my business need?
It depends on what you want to demonstrate. ISO 9001 covers quality and suits most businesses. Others cover the environment, health and safety, information security, food safety and medical devices.
How long is an ISO certificate valid?
Three years, with a surveillance audit in each year between. At the end of three years, a recertification audit renews it.
How long does ISO certification take?
It depends on the size of the business, the standard, and how much of the system is already in place. Preparing and running the system takes most of the time. The audit itself is short.
Does Define IPR Solutions issue ISO certificates?
No. Certificates are issued only by certification bodies. Define IPR Solutions assists with ISO certification and the documentation it requires.
How much does ISO certification cost?
It depends on the standard, the number of employees and sites, and the certification body's audit fee. We quote after a free consultation.
